What an amazing week we had at the Birds Nest. Legendary performances by Arizona’s own Alice Cooper, Collective Soul, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Rev Run of RUN-D.M.C., O.A.R. and several great cover bands helped attract nearly 20,000 guests over the course of four nights. On behalf of The Thunderbirds, our sponsors, vendors and partners the Scottsdale Police and Fire Departments, we’d like to thank everyone who attended the 2010 Birds Nest. Your support of the Birds Nest along with the WM Phoenix Open helps raise much needed funds for local charities, which last year amounted to nearly $5 million.

With regard to Saturday night, while overall attendance for the entire Birds Nest property always remained below fire code capacity, we deeply regret that some guests were not able to fit inside the tent where the concert was taking place. For safety purposes, we had to turn away some of these guests and immediately began issuing full refunds at the Birds Nest box office on Saturday night. We sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience this caused.

On Sunday we continued to issue refunds to guests with unscanned tickets who were not permitted admittance to the Nest due to these circumstances. For those with unscanned tickets who purchased their tickets at the Birds Nest box office or at one of the on-course ticket booths, refunds will continue to be honored on Monday, Mar. 1 from 10 AM – 3 PM at the Birds Nest Box office located at the main entrance to the Nest (82nd Street & Bell Road). Refunds will resume on Tuesday, Mar. 2 – Thursday, Mar. 4 from 9 AM – 4 PM and Friday, Mar. 5 from 9 AM – 2 PM at the WM Phoenix Open Office (7226 N. 16th St. #100, Phoenix, AZ, 85020). Those preferring to receive a refund by mail can mail their purchase receipt and unscanned ticket to the WM Phoenix Open Office. Unscanned tickets purchased through Ticketmaster must be refunded at the point of purchase (TM outlets, 800-745-3000).

Since net proceeds generated at the Birds Nest from the sale of tickets, food & beverage, etc. get donated to local charities, those eligible for a refund may also choose to consider their purchased ticket as a charitable contribution. In that case, they can redeem their unscanned ticket in exchange for a receipt acknowledging their donation at the WM Phoenix Open Office according the schedule listed above or simply mail their ticket to WM Phoenix Open Office and a receipt will be mailed back to them.

The 21-year-old TOUR rookie’s cumulative score of 45 feet, 3 inches beat out contender, Scott Verplank by 3 feet 6 inches.

In its first year as title sponsor, Waste Management introduced the “Going for the Green” contest offering to donate $25,000 to Keep America Beautiful in the name of the player who is closest to the pin at the par 3, 16th. The player’s distance to the hole each round was added together to reach a cumulative total. Of the proceeds, 50 percent will go to the local Keep Phoenix Beautiful chapter and 50 percent will go to Keep America Beautiful’s national ThinkGreenÒ grant in Fowler’s name.

“The ‘Going for the Green’ contest is only one of the exciting initiatives we will be introducing to the Waste Management Phoenix Open and PGA TOUR over the next several years as title sponsors,” said David Steiner, CEO, Waste Management. “We will continue to implement smart solutions to turn waste into resource at the tournament and showcase Think Greenâ solutions that encourage social responsibility and a renewed commitment to leaving the planet in better condition for generations to come. We proudly congratulate Rickie Fowler as the first “Going for the Green” winner.”

Coming in second for the “Going for the Green” contest was Scott Verplank hitting a cumulative score of 48 feet, 9 inches. Third and fourth place were Ryan Moore 54 feet, 10 inches, and Johnson Wagner 59 feet, 4 inches, followed by Mark Wilson at fifth with a cumulative score of 60 feet, 8 inches.

Hunter Mahan shot 65-65 on the weekend to beat Fowler by one shot to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Fowler’s second place finish is his second runner-up finish of his young career, both in Arizona.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open was played February 22 – 28, 2010, at the TPC Scottsdale. The tournament host Thunderbirds have raised more than $65.9 million for charities, with more than $37.9 million generated since 2004. The 2010 edition marked the 75th playing of the event, making it one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR, not including the major championships.

Title sponsor Waste Management, Inc., based in Houston, Texas, is the leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America.
