Countdown to the 2011 “Greatest Show On Grass”

Geoff OgilvyGeoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion and worlds 12th-ranked golfer; and Fred Couples, winner of 15 PGA TOUR events, including the 1992 Masters; round out another stellar field for the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open, which will be played Feb. 22-28 at the TPC Scottsdale.


The 144-player field includes 17 of the top-30 and 97 of the top-125 money leaders from the 2009 season.


Phil Mickelson (No. 3) and Martin Kaymer (No. 6) are the highest ranked players on the Official World Golf Ranking currently in the field.  Other top-ranked players who have committed include Ian Poulter (11th), Kenny Perry (13th), Robert Allenby (14th), Sean O’Hair (16th), Lucas Glover (22nd), Zach Johnson (24th), Camilo Villegas (26th), Anthony Kim (28th), Y.E. Yang (29th), Alvaro Quiros (30th), Nick Watney (31st), Hunter Mahan (33rd), Michael Sim (38th) and Matt Kuchar (43rd).


2008 Masters champ Trevor Immelman and Fredrik Jacobson also committed today, while Steve Stricker and Dustin Johnson withdrew for undisclosed reasons.


PGA TOUR members had until 5 p.m. (Eastern) today to commit to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on TOUR.


The 2010 field features a strong International presence, with highly-ranked Kaymer, Poulter and Quiros all making their debut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  The trio all currently rank among the top-14 on the European Tour, and have a combined 20 European Tour victories.


Other notables to commit include three-time Phoenix Open champion Mark Calcavecchia, 12-time PGA TOUR winner Justin Leonard, 20-time PGA TOUR winner Davis Love III, 12-time PGA TOUR winner David Toms, former University of Arizona golfer Rory Sabbatini, eight-time PGA TOUR winner Stuart Appleby and 2003 British Open champion Ben Curtis.


Kenny Perry (2009), J.B. Holmes (2008, 2006), Aaron Baddeley (2007), Phil Mickelson (2005 and 1996), Jonathan Kaye (2004), Chris DiMarco (2002), Tom Lehman (2000), Rocco Mediate (1999), Jesper Parnevik (1998) and Lee Janzen (1993) join Calcavecchia as the other former FBR/Phoenix Open champions in the field thus far.


A number of local golfers also have committed including Michael Allen, Ricky Barnes, Pat Perez, Ted Purdy, Jeff Quinney, Chez Reavie and Kevin Streelman.


Sponsor exemptions were handed out Billy Mayfair, Rickie Fowler, Jonathan Kaye, Rocco Mediate, Alvaro Quiros, Chris DiMarco, Joe Ogilvie and Sam Saunders.


The Waste Management Phoenix Open will be played February 22 – 28, 2010, at the TPC Scottsdale.
